Screens Developers Lenses chasma Nepal

Glasses for developers: what actually helps after 10 hours of code

For a long coding day the lens that matters is one with a proper double-sided anti-reflective coating, which removes the reflections you look through all day. Blue filtering is a minor benefit. Over about 38, an office lens covering screen and desk distance beats both. The three free changes, screen distance, lighting and breaks, outperform any lens.

Glasses for developers: what actually helps after 10 hours of code

The most useful thing about glasses for developers is not the tint, it is the coating. If you write code for ten hours a day, the feature that actually helps is a proper double-sided anti-reflective coating. Everything else is secondary, and some of it is marketing. This is written for the Kathmandu tech crowd, where a twelve-hour day in Jhamsikhel or Naxal is not unusual.

Why anti-reflective is the one that matters

An uncoated lens reflects about 8 percent of the light hitting it, from both surfaces. Some of that bounces back at the viewer. More importantly, some bounces around between the lens surfaces and your eye, and you look through that scattered light all day without ever consciously noticing it.

Take it away and contrast improves, text edges sharpen, and the low-grade effort your visual system was making disappears. That is what people describe as feeling less tired by evening. Our full argument is in is an anti-reflective coating worth the extra NPR.

At Blurkart that is the multi-coated lens at NPR 1,800, which also carries a hard scratch coat and a hydrophobic top layer so fingerprints wipe off rather than smear.

What blue filtering actually does

Less than the packaging suggests. Screens emit far less blue light than daylight, and there is no evidence of retinal damage from normal use. The sleep claim is weak and dose dependent.

Blue filtering does slightly reduce glare, and some people prefer the warmth on white backgrounds. It is a small, real, minor benefit. It arrives bundled with the anti-reflective coating anyway, which is the part doing the work. We went through the evidence in do blue light glasses actually work.

The age thing nobody plans for

Somewhere between 38 and 45, close focus starts to weaken. For a developer the first sign is not reading a book; it is the terminal font suddenly feeling small, or moving the laptop back.

The instinct is to get progressives. At a desk, that is often the wrong lens, because the mid zone of a progressive is narrow and a wide monitor pushes you outside it. An office lens, which covers roughly 40 cm to 2 m with a much wider intermediate zone, is usually better for eight hours at a desk, with a separate distance pair for everything else.

We cover the general decision in single vision or progressive lenses, but for desk-dominant work, ask specifically about office lenses.

Glasses for developers: the frame, after hour eight

Weight is what you feel late in the day. A thick acetate frame can be double the weight of a light one, and the marks on your nose by 8 pm are the receipt.

Pick something light with spring hinges, and a lens area tall and wide enough that you are not looking over the rim at the top of a large monitor. The Premium Rectangle Frame with blue light protection at NPR 1,500 and the Chrome Heart Square Frame at NPR 1,650 are the two we hand to developers most often.

Three free changes that beat any lens

  1. Distance. Screen at a straight arm's length, about 60 to 70 cm. If the text is too small there, increase the font, do not move closer.
  2. Light. Window to the side, never behind or in front of the screen. Screen brightness matched to the room, using a sheet of paper as the reference.
  3. Breaks. Every 20 minutes, 20 seconds looking at something across the room. A timer for the first week makes it automatic.

The full measurements are in how to set up a desk that does not wreck your eyes. Do these before spending anything.

Dark mode, honestly

In a dim room, dark mode reduces the brightness difference between screen and surroundings and is more comfortable. In a bright room it does the opposite, forcing your pupils to work against the room.

There is also an astigmatism effect: light text on a dark background scatters more in an eye with uncorrected astigmatism, which is why some developers find dark mode blurrier and assume something is wrong with them. Usually it means an eye test is overdue.

Coding garda aankha dukhne: common questions

"Power chhaina tara aankha dukhchha, kina?" Very often a small uncorrected astigmatism that costs nothing while walking around and everything at a screen. Free test, ten minutes.

"Blue cut kinnu parchha?" Not for the blue part. Buy it for the anti-reflective coating it comes with.

"Ratri ma kaam garda ke garne?" Lower the screen brightness with the room, keep one soft lamp on behind the monitor rather than working in the dark, and blink deliberately.

"Do monitor chha, farak parchha?" Yes. Two monitors mean more head turning and a wider gaze range, which makes a narrow progressive corridor worse and an office lens better.

What we would put on a developer

Under 38: light frame, multi-coated anti-reflective single vision, and the three free changes. Over 38: the same coating in an office lens. In both cases, a free eye test first, because the most common finding is a small power nobody knew about. Students heading into a study term should read exam season eye care instead.

Frequently asked

Do I need computer glasses if I have no prescription?
Often not. Fix distance, lighting and breaks first. If fatigue persists after a week, get tested, because a small uncorrected power is a very common cause among people who otherwise see fine.
Are gaming or coding glasses different from normal ones?
Mostly marketing. What they have in common with a genuinely useful lens is the anti-reflective coating. The tint is the part that varies and matters least.
What frame suits someone at a desk all day?
A light one. After ten hours, weight is what you feel. Light acetate or TR90 with spring hinges, and a lens area big enough that you are not looking over the rim at a wide monitor.
Coding garne manche lai kun chasma ramro?
A multi-coated anti-reflective lens in a light frame, and an office lens instead if you are over about 38. Fix the screen distance and the room lighting first, because those are free and they matter more.
