Eye test Driving Nepal

The eye test before a driving licence in Nepal

The vision check for a Nepali driving licence covers distance acuity and usually colour vision. People commonly fail on mild short-sightedness or astigmatism they never noticed, because daily life does not test distance the way a chart does. Get a free eye test first, and if you need glasses, wear them for the test and while driving.

The eye test before a driving licence in Nepal

The eye test for a driving licence catches a lot of people by surprise, and almost never because their vision suddenly changed. It is because nothing in daily life tests distance vision the way a chart does, so a mild power can sit unnoticed for years.

What the eye test for a driving licence covers

Two things in practice.

Distance visual acuity. Reading a chart at a set distance, usually one eye at a time. This is the part people fail. It measures exactly the skill driving needs: resolving a number plate, a sign or a pedestrian at range.

Colour vision. Usually a plate test where numbers are hidden in coloured dots. It exists because signals and signs carry information in colour.

Requirements and standards vary by licence category and can change, so treat the transport office as the authority on the threshold. What does not change is that turning up unprepared wastes a day.

Why people fail without knowing anything was wrong

Mild short-sightedness is the usual culprit. Under about minus 1.00 you function perfectly: you read, you use a phone, you recognise faces. What you quietly stopped doing is reading distant signs, and you compensated by getting closer or squinting without registering it.

Uncorrected astigmatism is the second. It blurs edges at every distance and makes lights streak, and because it has always been that way there is no before to compare against. Astigmatism explained covers it.

A difference between the two eyes is the third. Tested together you pass easily, because the good eye carries the weaker one. Tested one at a time, which is how a licence check works, the weaker eye is exposed. Plenty of people discover a real difference at exactly this moment.

What to do before you go

Get an eye test first. It is free at both showrooms, takes about ten minutes, needs no appointment and carries no obligation to buy. You leave with a written prescription you can use anywhere. What a free eye test includes runs through each step.

If you need glasses, order them with enough time to collect before your appointment. Most single vision pairs are ready in one to three working days, and how long glasses take covers what pushes that out.

Ask for a colour vision check specifically if you have never had one. It is quick, and finding out at the transport office is a bad place to learn.

If you pass wearing glasses

Your licence is issued with a condition that you wear corrective lenses while driving. This is normal and carries no penalty. What it does mean is that driving without them is driving outside your licence conditions, which matters for insurance as much as for enforcement.

Practically, that argues for a spare pair kept in the vehicle. A complete pair starts at NPR 1,749, and two pairs or one good pair covers when a spare earns its place. It is also the strongest case for prescription sunglasses rather than clip-ons, since clip-ons get lost exactly when the sun is in your eyes.

While we have you

If night driving is already unpleasant, mention it. Headlight glare that has got worse is usually an outdated prescription, uncorrected astigmatism, or early cataract, and all three are worth finding now rather than later. Night blindness or bad street lighting separates them, and never buy yellow night driving lenses.

Walk into Pulchowk or Boudha Sunday to Friday, 9:00 to 19:00. Frames start at NPR 999 with single vision lenses from NPR 750.

On the day

Take your glasses even if you think you will pass without them, because reading the chart unaided and failing by one line is a wasted trip you could have avoided by putting them on.

Take your prescription slip as well. It is not usually required, but it settles any question quickly and costs nothing to carry.

Go earlier in the day if you can. Eyes are measurably worse after a long day at a screen, and a marginal result at 4pm can be a comfortable pass at 10am. That is not gaming the test; it is being measured when you are representative rather than tired. If you wear contact lenses, take them out an hour before or wear glasses instead, because a lens that has been on your eye all day changes the reading.

Frequently asked

Can I wear glasses for the licence eye test?
Yes, and you should if you need them. The licence is then issued with the condition that you wear corrective lenses while driving, which is normal and not a penalty.
What if I am colour blind?
Colour vision deficiency cannot be corrected with lenses, and requirements vary by licence category. Find out before you apply rather than at the counter. A colour vision check takes a couple of minutes.
