Clear frames: how to keep them from yellowing

Clear frames yellow because UV light, skin oil, sweat and heat all break down the surface of clear acetate. Keeping them out of hot cars, washing them weekly with soap and water, and wiping the temple tips daily slows it a lot. Once the discolouration is deep in the material it cannot be reversed.

Clear frames: how to keep them from yellowing

Clear frames look excellent for the first year and then quietly go amber around the arms. Clear frames yellowing is not a defect and it is not you being unusually oily. It is what happens to transparent acetate in daily use, and a few habits slow it down considerably.

What causes clear frames to yellow

Ultraviolet light. The same thing that fades a curtain. UV breaks the polymer chains near the surface of the acetate, and the by-products are yellow. Anyone outdoors a lot in Kathmandu is running this process faster than someone in an office.

Skin oil. Sebum works into the surface over months, and it does not rinse off with a dry wipe. This is why the discolouration almost always starts where the frame touches you: the temple tips, the section behind the ears, and the nose pad area.

Sweat. Salt is mildly corrosive to the surface finish. Anyone riding a motorbike through a Kathmandu summer is applying it twice a day.

Heat. The fastest of the four. A frame left on a dashboard or a sunny windowsill can age visibly in a few weeks. Heat also softens acetate enough to warp the fit, so you can lose the shape and the colour in one afternoon.

The routine that actually slows it

Once a week, wash the whole frame, not just the lenses. Lukewarm water, one drop of dish soap, work it gently over the arms and the bridge with your fingers, rinse, and dry with a clean microfibre cloth. Most people clean the lenses daily and the frame never, which is exactly backwards for this problem.

Daily, give the temple tips a wipe. Thirty seconds on the two places that discolour first is worth more than any product.

Never leave them in a hot car, on a dashboard, near a window in direct sun, or on top of a laptop vent. When they are not on your face they should be in the case.

Avoid alcohol wipes, hand sanitiser and household glass cleaner on the frame. They strip the surface finish, and a stripped surface absorbs oil faster. The cleaning guide covers the same method for lenses.

What cannot be undone

Bring a yellowed frame in and we will clean it properly in the ultrasonic bath, which removes the film of oil and grime sitting on the surface. On a frame that is only a year or so old this often recovers more than people expect, because a good part of what looks like yellowing is residue rather than the material itself.

What we cannot do is reverse oxidation that has gone into the acetate. Polishing takes off a layer and buys a few months at the cost of the frame getting thinner and losing its edges. We would rather tell you that than sell you a service that does not last.

Buying with this in mind

If you love the clear look but want it to last, ask what the frame is made of. Good quality acetate holds up noticeably better than cheap injection-moulded plastic, which is one of the invisible differences behind two frames at different prices. Some polyamide and TR90 frames resist yellowing well and are lighter with it.

A lightly smoked or tinted transparent frame, rather than fully water-clear, also hides the early stages while keeping the effect. Come and look at the range at either showroom, or browse frames from NPR 999 online.

Clear frames and yellowing: what three years looks like

Realistically, a well-cared-for clear acetate frame stays convincingly clear for around a year to eighteen months, develops a faint warmth in the second year that most people do not notice until they see a new one beside it, and looks visibly amber around the temple tips by the third.

That is not a failure, it is the material behaving normally, and it is worth knowing before you buy rather than after. If you want a clear frame, budget for it being a two-year frame rather than a five-year one, and wash it weekly to get the longer end of that.

If you want the same light look without the clock running, a pale grey, smoke or honey acetate gives you most of it and hides the ageing entirely.

Frequently asked

Can yellowed clear frames be made clear again?
Surface residue can be cleaned off and often accounts for more of the look than people expect. Once the acetate itself has oxidised through, no. Polishing removes material and only helps briefly.
Which clear frame material yellows least?
Good quality acetate holds up better than cheap injection-moulded plastic, and some polyamide and TR90 frames resist it well. Ask what a frame is made of before buying if this matters to you.
