Caring for your glasses is mostly a complete maintenance habit rather than a product you buy. A good pair of glasses can last 5+ years with proper care. Here's everything you need to know.

Storing Your Frames

Always use a hard case when not wearing your glasses. Never leave them lens-down on a surface. Heat is the enemy, never leave frames in a hot car.

Adjusting the Fit

If your frames are slipping, visit us for a free adjustment. Bending frames yourself risks breaking them. For minor adjustments, warm the plastic temple tips under warm water for 30 seconds.

Lens Coating Lifespan

• Anti-reflective: 2 to 3 years with proper care

• Photochromic: 2 to 3 years before darkening efficiency decreases

• Scratch-resistant: Doesn't prevent scratches, just reduces them

Kathmandu makes this harder

Three local conditions shorten the life of a lens faster than normal wear.

Dust, from October through May. Fine road dust settles on lenses within an hour outdoors and turns any dry wipe into sandpaper. Rinse more often rather than cleaning more carefully; a ten-second tap rinse at the office beats one thorough clean at night.

Monsoon humidity, June through September. Warm wet air plus diesel leaves a film that a cloth only smears around. Soap is the answer, and a proper rinse afterwards.

Heat. A motorbike seat, a car dashboard or a sunny windowsill in May gets hot enough to soften an acetate frame and craze a coating. This is the single most common reason we see warped frames at the counter.

The two-handed habit

Take your glasses off with both hands, one on each temple. One-handed removal twists the hinge every single time, and after a year the screw loosens or the barrel cracks. This habit costs nothing and roughly doubles the working life of a frame.

While you are at it: fold them and set them down lens-up, or put them in the case. Lens-down on a table is how the front surface gets its first scratch.

Caring for your glasses: a weekly routine

Daily cleaning keeps lenses clear. A weekly wash keeps the frame alive, and almost nobody does it. Take two minutes once a week: lukewarm water, one drop of dish soap, work it over the arms, the bridge and the nose pads with your fingers, rinse, dry with a clean microfibre cloth.

That removes the skin oil and dust that builds into an abrasive crust around the pads and temple tips. It is also the single best thing you can do for a clear or light-coloured frame, which discolours from exactly that residue.

Two habits matter as much as cleaning. Take glasses off with both hands rather than pulling from one arm, which is what twists a frame out of true. And never leave them on a dashboard or a sunny windowsill, because heat crazes the coating and warps acetate in a single afternoon.
