Daily vs monthly contact lenses: the real cost per month in Nepal

The daily vs monthly contact lenses question comes down to how often you wear them. Monthly contact lenses are cheaper than dailies if you wear lenses most days of the week, but the gap is smaller than the shelf price suggests once you add solution and cases. If you wear lenses only a few days a week, dailies win on both cost and safety. Here is the maths with our actual prices.

What monthly lenses cost per month

A monthly lens is opened, worn for up to 30 days with nightly cleaning, then thrown away. Our two most common options:

• iConnect Monthly, 6-lens pack, NPR 1,100. Six lenses is three months for two eyes, so about NPR 370 a month.
• Bausch & Lomb PureVision2, 6-lens pack, NPR 4,400. Silicone hydrogel, which lets far more oxygen through. About NPR 1,470 a month.

Now add the parts people forget. A 360 ml bottle of multipurpose solution lasts about a month with proper rubbing and rinsing, and costs NPR 350 to NPR 500 depending on the brand. A new case every month is another NPR 50 to NPR 100. So the true monthly figure is roughly NPR 800 for the budget lens and NPR 1,900 for the premium one.

What daily lenses cost per month

A daily lens is worn once and binned. No solution, no case, no cleaning.

• SEED 1dayPure Moisture, 32-lens pack, NPR 3,900. That is 16 days for two eyes, so about NPR 244 per day, or NPR 122 per lens.

Worn every day of the month, that is around NPR 7,300. Worn three days a week, it is about NPR 3,200. Worn only for weddings, football and the occasional night out, it can be under NPR 1,000.

Daily vs monthly contact lenses: the break-even point

Put the two side by side and the crossover is around four wearing days a week. Below that, dailies cost the same or less and you never touch a cleaning bottle. Above that, monthlies save real money, especially the budget hydrogel option.

Note the monthly figure does not change with wearing days. Once the blister is open, the 30-day clock runs whether the lens is in your eye or in the case.

Cost is not the only thing

Kathmandu is dusty from October to May and humid the rest of the year. A monthly lens collects that on its surface and relies on you to clean it off properly every night. A daily lens does not. If you ride a bike to work, dailies are worth the extra.

Hygiene honesty matters more than budget. If you know you will skip the rub-and-rinse step some nights, or top up old solution instead of replacing it, you are safer on dailies at any price.
