ZEISS Lenses: The History Behind the Brand
ZEISS is a German optics company founded by Carl Zeiss in Jena in 1846. Its partnership with physicist Ernst Abbe and glass chemist Otto Schott built a reputation for precision optics, and its Vision Care division now makes eyeglass lenses. ZEISS says it is considered the inventor of anti-reflective coatings.

Quick answer: what is ZEISS?
ZEISS is a German optics company founded in 1846 by Carl Zeiss in Jena. Its Vision Care division makes eyeglass lenses, and the company says it is considered the inventor of anti-reflective coatings.
Walk into almost any optical shop and you will see the ZEISS name. But the brand is far older than the lenses on your glasses, and its history explains a lot about why it is trusted by so many eye care professionals.
A workshop in Jena, 1846
On 17 November 1846, a young precision mechanic named Carl Zeiss opened a small workshop for mechanics and optics in the German city of Jena. It was a modest start, and for a while the business made instruments mainly for local universities.
Ernst Abbe and Otto Schott change everything
The turning point came when Zeiss teamed up with the physicist and mathematician Ernst Abbe in the 1860s. Abbe brought a scientific method to lens design, replacing much of the trial and error that was common at the time. His work led to the Abbe sine condition, a rule that high-performance lenses must satisfy to give sharp images.
Later, glass chemist Otto Schott joined the effort, and together they developed new kinds of optical glass in Jena. In 1889, after Carl Zeiss died, Abbe created the Carl Zeiss Foundation, which still shapes the company's ownership today.
From microscopes to eyeglass lenses
ZEISS grew from microscopes into cameras, binoculars and medical optics. In spectacles, a major step came in the early 1900s, when Moritz von Rohr, working with the ophthalmologist Allvar Gullstrand, calculated the Punktal lens. It was designed to reduce blur when you look through the edges of the lens, an idea that still sits behind modern lens design. ZEISS dates the start of its Vision Care business to 1912.
What ZEISS makes for glasses today
- Lens designs: single vision, digital, office and progressive lenses, including the SmartLife family.
- Coatings: the DuraVision range of anti-reflective and sun coatings.
- Special solutions: lenses for myopia management in children, night driving, photochromic (self-tinting) lenses and prescription sunglasses.
- Built-in protection: clear plastic ZEISS lenses include UV protection up to 400 nm.
Does history make the lens better?
A long record of research is a good sign, but it does not replace a correct prescription, accurate measurements and a well-fitted frame. Even the best lens will disappoint if the fitting height is wrong or the prescription is out of date. The brand is where your decision starts, not where it ends.

Frequently asked
- Who founded ZEISS?
- Carl Zeiss opened a workshop for precision mechanics and optics in Jena, Germany, on 17 November 1846. The physicist Ernst Abbe joined him in the 1860s and the glass chemist Otto Schott later became a key partner.
- Which country is ZEISS from?
- ZEISS is a German company. It began in Jena and is today a global technology group with several divisions, including the Vision Care division that makes eyeglass lenses.
- Does ZEISS only make eyeglass lenses?
- No. ZEISS is also known for microscopes, medical devices, camera lenses and industrial measuring technology. Eyeglass lenses come from its Vision Care business.
- Is the Abbe value connected to ZEISS?
- Yes, in name. The Abbe number, which describes how much a lens material splits colours, is named after Ernst Abbe, who worked with Carl Zeiss.
- Are ZEISS lenses available in Nepal?
- Availability depends on the optical store. Ask your optician which ZEISS lens designs and coatings they can supply, and ask for the lens to be confirmed on your invoice.
